The former air defense operations room where the first reports of atomic bomb damage were issued.
In 1871 (Meiji 4), the Meiji government established the first branch of the Chinzei Chindai in the castle, and military facilities gradually began to gather around the castle. In preparation for the fighting on the continent, the garrison was reorganized into a division. In 1888, 11 infantry regiments, an artillery unit, a cavalry unit, and other units were stationed in the 5th Division, and the area around Motomachi became a major military base. When the Sino-Japanese War began in 1894, the Imperial Headquarters was established in the Honmaru. In June 1945, it was promoted to the Chugoku Military District Headquarters. In the lower part of the Honmaru, there was Building No. 1, which contained the commander's room and staff department, as well as lodgings for students of Hijiyama Girls' High School, and an air defense operation room in the semi-basement. The bomb hit the castle on August 6 of the same year, 790 meters from the hypocenter. The semi-basement air defense operation room was also destroyed by the blast, but the first reports of damage were sent from here. ◆Notice of cancellation of tours of the interior of the facility◆ Due to aging, the interior of the facility is experiencing concrete peeling and there is a risk of the concrete falling off, so tours of the facility have been canceled.
