1.82 kilometers from the hypocenter, a deformed Nine Wheels remains on the roof

Rai Sanyo Montokuden was built in 1931 (Showa 6) to mark the 100th anniversary of Rai Sanyo's death. The building features a thick Western-style exterior wall and a Japanese-style roof topped with nine rings. As the war situation worsened, most of the family registers were evacuated from the city hall to this building. The atomic bomb hit the city on August 6, 1945, 1.82 kilometers from the hypocenter. The family registers were scattered by the blast, but fortunately they were not destroyed by fire. After the war, it was used as the Asano Library and a social education facility, but is now closed. The nine rings on the roof have been preserved in their deformed state.
