The citizens' hopes for peace are entrusted to this statue, which represents the strong love of a mother who endures the hardships that befall her and overcomes her sorrow.
Date of construction: August 5, 1960 The statue represents the strong love of a mother who endures the hardships that befall her and overcomes her sorrow, and the citizens' hopes for peace are entrusted to this statue. It is the work of Sapporo-born sculptor Shin Hongo, who has left behind many monuments filled with human love, including the "Wadatsumi Statue." When the 5th World Conference Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs was held in 1959, the Japan Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs presented the original plaster statue to the mayor of Hiroshima, Hamai, as a token of gratitude for his promotion of the anti-atomic and hydrogen bomb movement. After that, the Hiroshima City Women's Association, which worked hard to ensure the success of the conference, called for the statue to be placed in the Peace Memorial Park, and raised funds to have it made into a bronze statue, which was then donated to Hiroshima City.
