[Date of erection] December 6, 1953 [Erected by] Kawauchi Village Widows Association (Shiraume-kai) [History] The advance party of the Kawauchi Village Volunteer Citizens' Corps, which was dispatched from Onui, Kawauchi Village, Asa District (currently Kawauchi District, Asaminami Ward) to Nakajima Shinmachi (currently Nakajima Town, 650 meters from the hypocenter), was exposed to the atomic bomb while working on building evacuation at the site and was completely wiped out. The following party was exposed to the bomb on the way to the site, and although some returned unscathed, many later suffered from radiation sickness. The monument was erected to commemorate these victims of the atomic bomb and those who died in World War II. There are two monuments to commemorate the victims of the Kawauchi Village Volunteer Citizens' Corps: the "Volunteer Corps Monument" (Naka Ward) and the "Atomic Bomb Memorial Tower for the Souls of Kawauchi Village, Asa District" (Nishi Ward). Every year around August 10th, a memorial service is held in the grounds of Kawauchi Elementary School, sponsored by the Kawauchi School District Social Welfare Council. *If you wish to visit, please contact us in advance (please contact us by phone (082-877-0044) with the desired date and time of the visit, the representative's name, the number of visitors, and contact information).
