Memorial Monument for the Chugoku Military District Headquarters Soldiers, Civilian Employees, and Mobilized Students

Next to the monument stands the site of the Air Defense Operations Room of the Chugoku Military District Headquarters, where a student from the girls' school sent out the first report of the devastation of Hiroshima.

[Date of Construction] May 1979 [Erected by] Hiroshima Shiyukai [History] At the time, the Motomachi area, centered around Hiroshima Castle, was a major military base, home to numerous military facilities. The headquarters of the Chugoku Military District Headquarters, its central location, was located in the Honmaru and Ninomaru sections of Hiroshima Castle. In addition to military personnel, the atomic bombing also claimed the lives of students and faculty from Hijiyama Girls' High School, Hiroshima Jogakuin Girls' High School, Hiroshima Jogakuin College, and Hiroshima Women's College, who were mobilized for communications work. Next to the monument are the remains of the Chugoku Military District Headquarters Air Defense Operations Room, where a Hijiyama Girls' High School student sent the first report of the devastation of Hiroshima. In addition, there is a monument commemorating the deaths of military personnel at the headquarters, known as the "Chugoku Military District Headquarters Martyrs' Monument" (Minami Ward).
