[Date of erection] August 6, 1955 [Erected by] Volunteers from the former Hiroshima Army Hospital and Hiroshima Army Hospital Atomic Bomb Memorial Association [History] At the time, the Motomachi area, centered around Hiroshima Castle, was a major military base where military facilities were concentrated, and the First Army Hospital and the Second Army Hospital were also located. The current location of this monument is the former site of the Second Army Hospital. Just before the bombing, both hospitals housed approximately 1,000 patients, and due to their proximity to the hypocenter, many of them were killed. The names of 738 Army Hospital staff members are inscribed on the joint memorial monument as "Hiroshima Army Hospital Atomic Bomb Victims." In addition to these, approximately 1,000 patients who were hospitalized were killed. The memorial stone was made by piling up garden stones from the former hospital that were exposed to the bomb, and using the hospital's gatepost as the memorial stone.
