[Date of erection] May 16, 1982 [Erected by] Memorial Monument Construction Committee [History] The monument was erected on the site of Hirose National School (now Hirose Elementary School), where the Special Guard Hiroshima Western Second Unit was stationed at the time (1.1 km from the hypocenter). The unit was a temporary unit organized by the Army in preparation for the mainland battle at the end of the Pacific War, and many members of the unit were killed in the atomic bombing.
