[Date of Construction] November 1950 [Constructor] Hiroshima Prefectural Firefighters' Martyrs in the Line of Duty Construction Committee [History] At the time, the Hiroshima Prefectural Office (850 meters from the hypocenter) and the Prefectural Hospital were located in Mizunashi-cho (now Kako-cho). This monument was built in front of the Butokuden (a martial arts hall located within the prefectural office) to commemorate the firefighters who died in the line of duty, but it collapsed and split into three pieces during the atomic bombing. In response to the occupation policy issued by the government in 1946 (removal of memorials to the dead from schools and public land), it was moved to its current location in 1950, and the victims of the atomic bomb were also enshrined there.
