Memorial monument for staff and students of Shudo Junior High School

A copper plaque bearing the names of the 188 victims is inscribed on the back.

[Date of construction] August 1946 (Showa 21) [Constructor] Shudo Gakuen [History] Many of Shudo Junior High School's students were killed, including 37 first-year students and 136 second-year students who were working to evacuate buildings in Zakoba-cho (now Kokutaiji-cho 1-chome, 1.2 km from the hypocenter). The monument was one of the earliest to be erected after the war, but in response to the occupation policy issued by the government in 1946 (Showa 21) (removal of memorials to the dead at schools and public sites), the characters for "atomic bomb" and the date of construction engraved on the back of the monument were scraped off and cement was applied. Currently, a copper plate engraved with the names of the 188 victims is set into the back. *If you wish to visit, please contact us in advance (please call 082-241-8291 with the desired date and time of visit, the representative's name, the number of visitors, and contact information).
