The base of the stone monument next to it, into which the explanatory plaque is attached, is made from a stone that was exposed to the atomic bomb in the schoolyard of Honkawa Elementary School.

[Date of Construction] November 3, 1995 [Constructor] Honkawa District Atomic Bomb Memorial Construction Committee [History] Honkawa National School (now Honkawa Elementary School) was the school closest to the hypocenter, 410 meters away. Approximately 400 students and 10 teachers and staff were killed. The school building burned down, leaving only the outer shell, but it was used after the bombing, with repeated repairs and renovations. When the school building was rebuilt, a part of it was preserved, and in 1988 (Showa 63), it was opened as a peace museum. After that, the voices calling for the construction of a monument grew among the students of Honkawa Elementary School, and the Monument Construction Promotion Committee, consisting of eight organizations including the Honkawa District Social Welfare Council, was formed, and the monument was erected. The base of the stone monument next to it, with the explanatory board embedded in it, is made of an atomic bomb-damaged stone from the Honkawa Elementary School playground. *Open to the public on school holidays.
