As the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing approached, calls grew louder for the erection of a monument to console the souls of the atomic bomb victims and to record them permanently, and the monument was completed in 1995.
[Date of erection] December 15, 1995 (Heisei 7) [Erecters] All Hiroshima Prison staff, Correctional Association, Hiroshima Prefecture Association of Prison Chaplains, Hiroshima Prefecture Prison Chaplaincy Project Supporters Association [History] Hiroshima Prison, located about 2km from the hypocenter, was protected by an outer wall, but the building was almost completely destroyed. Eight staff members and 15 inmates were killed on the spot or are missing. Many more were killed or injured afterwards, including those who died of atomic bomb disease, family members of staff members, and those who were involved in relief activities and suffered secondary radiation exposure. With the 50th anniversary of the bombing approaching, calls for the erection of a monument to comfort and permanently record the souls of the atomic bomb victims grew louder, and the monument was completed in 1995 (Heisei 7). *The building is currently under reconstruction and cannot be visited.
