[Date of construction] November 1961 (Showa 36) [Constructor] Hijiyama Gakuen [History] Most of the victims of the atomic bomb at Hijiyama Girls' High School were third-year students and teachers who had been mobilized for communications work at the Chugoku Military District Headquarters (790 meters from the hypocenter) in the inner citadel of Hiroshima Castle. First- and second-year students had gathered at the school (2.9 kilometers from the hypocenter) to help with building evacuation in the city center, and escaped unscathed.
