In 1966, when the shrine building was rebuilt, the current monument was erected.
[Date of construction] August 5, 1966 [Constructor] Toshogu Shrine [History] Toshogu Shrine (2.1 km from the hypocenter) suffered severe damage from the atomic bomb, including the destruction of the main hall and worship hall. The grounds were filled with many victims who had fled from the city center, and a temporary relief station was set up at the bottom of the stone steps. People who had taken refuge in the Futaba-no-Sato area died one after another and were cremated. Around 1947, the chief priest of Toshogu Shrine erected a wooden monument to commemorate the victims. In 1966, it was replaced with the current monument when the shrine building was rebuilt.
