[Date of erection] February 4, 1990 [Erecter] Yasumitsu Kakuyu [History] On August 6, 1945, a measuring device attached to a parachute was dropped at the same time as the atomic bomb to measure the changes in air pressure and temperature caused by the explosion. About two hours later, at 10:15, three parachutes fell in Kameyama Village, Asa County (now Kameyama, Asakita Ward) at the southern foot of Mount Fukuoji, one of which fell in a forest privately owned by the erector of the monument. The erector's eldest son was exposed to the bomb while mobilized as a student and fled to his sister's in-laws' house near the point where the parachute fell, but he died there. In order to convey the devastation of the atomic bomb and the fact that the parachute fell, the erector erected a monument at the point where the parachute fell near the place where the eldest son died. The fallen parachute and part of the measuring device are kept at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. A memorial service is held every year on August 6th at 8:15 and 10:15.
