[Date of construction] July 31, 2010 [Constructor] Association for the creation of an atomic bomb monument at Koi Elementary School [History] Immediately after the bombing, Koi National School (now Koi Elementary School) became a relief center. To commemorate the 2,000 victims who were cremated in the schoolyard, former students called for donations and other funds to build a monument. This monument was designed with the themes of "One Thousand Cranes," "Five Continents," "Globe," "Radiation Sign," and "Atomic Bombed Hiroshima." The five continents are represented by 999 cranes, and the 1,000th crane is combined with a globe. The radiation sign is represented by a stone from the former Hiroshima City Hall building that was exposed to the atomic bomb, and it contains the feelings of the atomic bomb victims who are still suffering from the damage caused by radiation. "Atomic Bombed Hiroshima" conveys the devastation of the atomic bomb with mementos of cremated students, melted glass bottles, tableware, and exposed roof shingles. It was created as a memorial to those who were cremated at Koi Elementary School, and as a prayer for the elementary school students who will carry the future of Japan on their shoulders to have a heart for world peace. *If you wish to visit, please contact us in advance (please call us at 082-271-4208 with the desired date and time of the visit, the representative's name, the number of visitors, and your contact information).
