When the Sino-Japanese War began in 1894, the Imperial Headquarters was established in the Honmaru. In June 1945, it was promoted to the Chugoku Military District Headquarters. In the lower part of the Honmaru, there was Building 1, which contained the commander's office and staff department, as well as lodgings for students of Hijiyama Girls' High School, and an air defense operation room in the semi-basement. The bomb was dropped 790 meters from the hypocenter. The semi-basement air defense operation room was also destroyed by the blast, but the first reports of damage were sent from here. The interior of the facility is experiencing concrete peeling due to aging, and tours of the facility have been suspended due to the risk of the concrete peeling off.
