Both Sakae Bridge and Sakaebashi Aqueduct survived the atomic bombing, but both banks were engulfed in flames.
Sakae Bridge, which spans the Kyobashi River, was completed in October 1930 (Showa 5). The bridge girders are made of reinforced concrete, and next to it was the Sakaebashi Aqueduct Bridge, which was completed a little earlier in 1924 (Taisho 13). The bridge was hit by the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 (Showa 20), 1.51 kilometers from the hypocenter. The hypocenter was located exactly on the extension of the bridge. Both Sakae Bridge and Sakaebashi Aqueduct survived the atomic bombing, but both banks were engulfed in raging flames.
