Rest in peace, I will not repeat my mistakes.
Date of Construction August 6, 1952 This monument was erected in the hope of rebuilding Hiroshima, which was destroyed by the world's first atomic bomb, as a city of peace. It was designed by Ken Tange, then professor at the University of Tokyo. The roof is in the shape of a haniwa house, as it was intended to protect the souls of the victims of the atomic bomb from the elements. The monument is inscribed with the words "Rest in peace, for we will not repeat the mistake," and the central stone chamber contains a register of the names of those who died in the atomic bomb, both at home and abroad. The register has been updated at the request of those involved, and as of August 6, 2024, it contains 128 volumes (120 volumes containing the names of 344,306 people and one volume with the notation "Many names unknown").
