To a soldier, the horse was truly a comrade in arms.
Origin of the Horse MonumentIn 1928, the Horse Monument was erected along the Ota River southwest of the 5th Quartermaster Corps barracks. On the morning of August 6, 1945, the Quartermaster Corps was annihilated when a US military plane dropped an atomic bomb, and many soldiers were killed. Among them, the Horse Monument was the only one that remained despite being exposed to the hot wind. In 1982, the Hiro Quartermaster Association (the former unit's veterans' association) restored it and labeled it as the Horse Monument at the Unit Site.
