A Satoyama Gibier Tour Guided by a City Office Lady Who Changed Her Life to a Hunter
[Highlights]
To consider how to live from the uncertainty of city life, I traveled to Ikuchijima Island.
By sharing my experiences and feelings about deciding to live in harmony with nature with a hunter I met there, I was able to see a world I never experienced in my everyday life.
From there, I was able to reexamine myself and find my purpose in life.
[Itinerary]
11:00-12:00 <Expanding Island Nature> Forest Walking Tour
Meet at the meeting place at the foot of the forest. From there, we will hike for approximately 40 minutes with a nature guide, learning about "Coexistence between Humans and Nature," "The Role of Wild Boars in the Forest," "How Forests Are Created," "The Blessings of Nature," and "The Threats of Nature."
12:30-13:30 <Expanding Life> Butchering Workshop
Arrive at "Gochiso no Mori" at the top of the forest.
Begin butchering a skinned wild boar.
Eating meat and the benefits of eating wild boar → Learn about the amount of livestock eaten in Japan and around the world, the amount of grain needed to feed them, and how this is connected to economic and food disparities. In Japan, environmental changes have led to an increase in wild boar populations, leading to extermination and the disposal of 90% of wild boar. Disposal is usually by incineration or burial, which is extremely costly. Eating wild boar is a significant role for humans in the natural world. By eating wild boar, we can contribute to the environment.
Differences between livestock and wild boar
→ Taste varies depending on the season and individual boar. What makes a delicious wild boar? Learn about wild boar ecology.
→ The nutritional value of wild boar and its health benefits.
Differences between meat cultures in Japan and overseas → Japanese meat culture is centered around eating sliced meat, so the fat is delicious. In contrast, overseas cultures are centered around steak. We will explain the differences in eating (cooking) methods and teach you how to enjoy wild boar meat. *We believe that a more realistic half-boar butchering adds depth to the story and is a unique experience, making it the highlight of the tour.
*For those who are not comfortable with this (for inbound tourists), we can also butcher only the thigh or shoulder meat, or we can use slides to explain the story behind it.
14:00 <Experience the Island's Blessings> Savor cuisine characterized by artistic table setting, allowing you to experience the island's bounty through your tastes. We offer "memorable flavors" that are only possible because of the stories of nature and life.
