Quaternary (approximately 2 million years ago to the present day) crustal movements

It was designated a national natural monument on May 6, 1961. On top of the upper Tertiary shale layer and the Kodachi gravel layer that unconformably develops above that, the old bedrock granite is pushed up from north to south along a gently angulated fault, indicating crustal movement during the Pleistocene. It is a valuable resource for understanding the formation of the current topography.
