Departing from Saijo Station, we introduce a course that goes around the remains of Ochaya (Honjin), Saijo Sakagura Dori, Sanjo Kofun, Shofukujiyama Park, and Akasaki Coast, and the history of Saijo and the nature of Akitsu.
The remains of Ochaya (Honjin)

In the Edo period, there are remains of an ochaya (honjin) where daimyo and dignitaries of the shogunate stayed. At that time, it was the largest of the nine headquarters in the Hiroshima Domain. It was demolished in the Meiji period, and now the Honjin Gomon Gate has been restored. The stone walls are lined with old random piles and modern troughs.

Saijo Sake Brewery Street

Saijo Sake Brewery Street prospered as an overland relay during the Edo period. After that, it became a famous brewery called “Sake Capital Saijo” due to the benefits of climate and groundwater suitable for sake brewing. Even now, there are seven breweries lined up here, and sake brewing continues with traditional techniques. The unique townscape, such as red brick chimneys, namako walls, and Saijo lattice, is attractive.

Mitsujo Kofun

This tumulus (kofun) is one of the largest keyhole-shaped tombs, and was built in the first half of the 5th century. It has now been restored and maintained, so you can see how it was built at that time.
Mitsujo Kofun is designated as a national historic site.

The Akasaki coast overlooks the beautiful archipelago of Setouchi. From May to June, white flowers bloom all over the potato field. It is a superb spot where you can overlook the calm Seto Inland Sea.
The potatoes on the Akasaki coast are famous for the brand of “Maruaka bazusho”, a specialty of Akitsu.
