The fireflies of Taishaku Gorge are very rare. A guide will show you around.
To ensure safety and to protect the firefly ecosystem, the Jinsekikogen Town Tourism Association runs guided firefly observation sessions during the peak season for a fee.
Glowworm viewing event
The Himebotaru ( Kinbotaru ) is a firefly that is slightly smaller than the Genji firefly and Heike firefly.
They are about 7mm long and females do not fly.
By the way, Himebotaru is the scientific name and Kinbotaru is the common name.
Also, unlike fireflies, the larvae feed on snails.
For this reason, they live in forests, and adults can be seen flying around among the trees in the mountains.
Furthermore, since females cannot fly, there are individual differences depending on the region.
The fireflies of Taishaku Gorge in particular are extremely valuable from an academic perspective, as they feed on snails that only live in Taishaku Gorge.
The period during which fireflies can be viewed is short, about one to ten days, with the peak season being around mid-July.
The "Golden Firefly Evening," which was held every year in early July, has been canceled since fiscal year 2017 due to various circumstances.
Therefore, since fiscal 2017, in order to ensure safety and protect the firefly ecosystem, the Jinsekikogen Town Tourism Association has been running paid guided firefly observation sessions during the peak firefly season.
