Ebisu Festival (Ebisu-ko/Ebessan)
The Ebisu Festival is an autumn festival held every year for three days on November 18th, 19th, and 20th at Ebisu Shrine in Naka Ward Ebisu-cho, Naka Ward. It is one of Hiroshima three major festivals, along with the Tokasan Festival and Sumiyoshi Festival.
This festival signals the arrival of winter in Hiroshima, and is known locally as "Ebisu-ko," a guardian deity of prosperous business.
In the shopping district near the shrine, a huge sale called "Seimonbarai" is held.
Additionally, people hoping for prosperity in business buy "komazarae" (bamboo rakes), which are lucky charms decorated with large and small coins, treasure ships, and other ornaments.
During the Goshi Festival, which has been held for about 400 years, a new event in Hiroshima called "Ebessan" will be held with the keywords "Smile, Hiroshima, Ebisu face."
On the evening of the 20th (Thursday), Chuo-dori Ave will be turned into a pedestrian zone, and performances such as night kagura and Japanese drumming will be held.
