Opened during the Edo period, this port town was a place to wait for the wind and tide, and prospered as a port of call for Kitamae-bune ships and trading ships of various feudal lords. Port facilities such as wharves and tall lanterns built at the end of the Edo period remain. The tall lantern was donated by the village headman Mikasaya Chuzaemon around the same time Sumiyoshi Shrine was built, and is about 6.18 meters tall. Records also remain that in addition to the tall lantern, there were 121 small lanterns. The tall lanterns played the role of what we would call a lighthouse today.
