One of Japan's most beautiful gorges! The world's three largest natural bridges, "Obashi Bridge," and spectacular activities at Lake Shinryu
This vast gorge stretches approximately 18km in length, spanning Shobara City and Jinsekikogen Town in Hiroshima Prefecture. Designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, it features a unique landscape formed by the erosion of a limestone karst plateau over many years. As one of the most picturesque spots in the Chugoku Mountains, it offers a place to enjoy the natural beauty and geological formations of the four seasons.
In the Kamitai-Shaku area to the north, you can stroll along the footpath alongside the stream and explore the 200m-deep limestone cavern, Hakuundo, and the 8m-high natural cave entrance, Oni-no-Karamon. The highlight of the area is Onbashi Bridge, a national natural monument. At 90m long and 40m high, it is the largest natural bridge in Japan and is considered one of the three largest natural bridges in the world.
In the "Shinryu Lake" area on the south side, you can get a close-up view of the cliffs and strangely shaped rocks from the lake on a sightseeing boat or kayak. A variety of activities are available on the lakeside, such as Segways and amphibious vehicles, offering a rich experience that makes the most of nature. The area is also famous for its fresh greenery and autumn leaves, and in autumn the vibrant trees reflecting on the lake's surface add a touch of color to the landscape. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for strolling, and bring a light jacket when visiting the limestone caves, even in summer.
