Tenmangu Shrine where Michizane is said to have rested.

Onaga Tenmangu Shrine is located at the foot of Mt. Futaba, about a 10-minute walk north from the Shinkansen exit of Hiroshima Station. This shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, who is widely revered as the god of learning. It is said that in the Heian period (901 AD), on his way to Dazaifu in Kyushu for a crime he did not commit, Michizane docked his ship here (the foot of Mt. Futaba was the sea at the time), climbed the mountain, and sat on a stone to rest. Later, in the Edo period (1640 AD), the main hall, worship hall, Zuishinmon gate, stone torii gate, etc. were built at this location, and the shrine was moved to this location and named Onaga Tenjingu Shrine. (After the Meiji period, the name was changed to Onaga Tenmangu Shrine.) The main hall and worship hall were unfortunately destroyed by heavy rain in 1926, so the shrine was rebuilt several years later. Although it was heavily damaged by the blast of an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, it escaped burning. In 2005, preservation work was carried out with assistance from Hiroshima City's Atomic Bombed Building Preservation and Preservation Project.
