Founded in 1675, it is a kuramoto with a long history in Hiroshima prefecture. The name "Hakubotan" is said to be named after the family crest of the Takatsukasa family, one of the five regents in Kyoto.
The sake is also sweet and is known to have been loved by Soseki Natsume and Shiko Munakata.
