The temple gate, which is said to have been moved to Niitakayama Castle by Takakage, is a national important cultural property.
It was built in Takayama Castle in 1577 by Kobayakawa Takakage to mourn his father, Mori Motonari, and his wife, but was moved to this location during strategic times to also serve as a fort to protect the west side of the castle. Enter through the right gate and climb the wide stone steps surrounded by earthen walls to find the massive, imposing, Momoyama-style mountain gate. It is said to have been moved here from Shintakayama Castle in Hongo-cho, which was the residence of the Kobayakawa clan for generations. It is a Momoyama-period structure with a four-legged gabled roof and real tile roof, and was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1953.
