The Mohri family crest on the roof of the temple!
This temple was built as a Tendai sect temple in 1153, and in 1235, Kobayakawa Mohei built a Nembutsu-do hall and made it his family temple. Since then, it has been the family temple of the Kobayakawa clan, and 20 graves (including one designated as an Important Cultural Property by the government) from the first head priest Sanehira to the 17th head priest Takakage are neatly lined up here. The temple's treasure house also houses a colored silk portrait of Kobayakawa Takakage (a National Important Cultural Property). This imposing, clothed statue was inscribed in 1594 by Zen Master Gyokuchu of Obai-in, a subtemple of Kyoto's Daitoku-ji Temple, in a longevity portrait (a portrait of a person painted while they were alive).
