Handmade Japanese paper handed down from the Edo period

In Otake, which is blessed with the clean and abundant water of the Kose River (Kino River), washi paper making has been passed down for over 400 years. Currently, the Otake Handmade Washi Preservation Society handles everything from mulberry cultivation to processing and paper making. Otake handmade washi paper, made from 100% paper mulberry, is white and strong, and comes in many different types, including paper for hand-painted carp streamers and paper for shoji screens. Otake Handmade Washi no Sato also offers hands-on learning, including tours of the production facility and paper-making experiences.
