The origin of Fukuyama, the city of roses, a park of relaxation

In 1956, local residents planted about 1,000 rose saplings in an effort to "revitalize the city devastated by war and bring peace to people's hearts," marking the beginning of "Fukuyama, the city of roses." By 1965, the park had taken on its current appearance, and it came to be known among local residents as "Rose Park." The park is filled with 5,500 colorful roses of 280 varieties. In mid-May, the Fukuyama Rose Festival, Fukuyama's largest event, is held with great fanfare, with Rose Park as one of the main venues.
