A brush village where people, culture and nature are in harmony
Kumano Town has a history of brush making since the late Edo period, and today, Kumano brushes are a traditional craft that is said to be the number one in Japan in terms of domestic production. The Brush Village Workshop is a facility that plays a central role in creating a brush village that makes use of the characteristics of this region. There is a permanent exhibition where you can learn about the history and culture of brushes, and you can always observe brush making demonstrations by traditional craftsmen. Various special exhibitions are held throughout the year, and you can also experience making a calligraphy brush. In the brush making experience, you can experience two of the 12 steps of brush making: "upper hair wrapping" and "finishing." You can also engrave your name on the brush shaft by making a reservation one week in advance. You can also try wearing a work uniform like a craftsman. You can also try Japanese-style tapestry making, where you draw calligraphy or pictures on a large white 70cm x 35cm paper that has been made into a hanging scroll, or try writing a picture.
