A collection of valuable arts and crafts such as the Heike Nokyo
Itsukushima Shrine has housed numerous artworks and historical documents that have been donated since the shrine building of its current scale was constructed at the end of the Heian period. The shrine has a large collection of swords, armor, helmets, Noh and Bugaku costumes and masks, painted fans, votive plaques, paintings, and more, of which about 260 items are designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. Some of these are on display in the Treasure House, which opened in 1934. The building is made of reinforced concrete, which was revolutionary for its time for its fire-resistant properties, and its surfaces are painted with lacquer.
