There is also a resource room where you can view materials related to the atomic bomb and peace, as well as handwritten manuscripts by writers connected to Hiroshima.
The library was donated by the Asano family, former feudal lords of Hiroshima, and opened as the Hiroshima City Asano Library in October 1931. It was renamed Hiroshima City Central Library in October 1974 and relocated to its current location in a new building.
The second floor features a space for borrowing books and reading, as well as a reading room offering the latest newspapers and magazines. The third floor houses the Hiroshima Reference Room, which offers materials related to the local area, the atomic bombing, and peace; the Hiroshima Literature Reference Room, where you can see handwritten manuscripts by authors with deep ties to Hiroshima; and a reference room where you can research and consult materials, access the Internet, and use commercial databases.
The library also hosts special exhibitions in the second-floor exhibition hall and various lectures.
In addition to books, services for people with disabilities include the mail-order lending of cassette books and digital audio books, face-to-face readings, and the use of equipment such as an automatic text-to-speech machine.
The library also houses the Hiroshima City Visual Culture Library.
*Hiroshima City Central Library will be closed from September 1, 2025, in preparation for relocation.
The new facility is scheduled to open at the beginning of 2026 at Yell Yell Building A.
