A cherry-colored tunnel that appears on a remote island in Mihara City
Tonomine is located on Sakishima Island, an isolated island in Mihara City. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in early April, a pink tunnel appears on the promenade that circles the peak. As the island faces depopulation and aging, cherry tree planting activities are carried out every year in the fallow fields around Tonomine as a measure to revitalize the area, and more than 1,000 cherry trees have been planted so far. In 1997, Mukouda Ward was recognized for the handmade activities of its residents and received the Forestry Agency Director-General's Award at the National Tree-Cultivation Activity Contest. In 2013, the Sakura Tree Owner System was introduced to increase the number of tourists from outside the island.
