The depot resumed repairing vehicles the day after the atomic bombing.

As the war spread, the Sanyo Main Line was tasked with transporting huge amounts of soldiers and military supplies. To facilitate smooth vehicle repairs, it was decided to establish a locomotive repair shop in Yagacho, and the Hiroshima Railway Bureau Hiroshima Machinery Department opened in 1943. The atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945 (Showa 20), 4.25 kilometers from the hypocenter. The main office, a two-story wooden building, had its glass and roof blown away and the ceiling collapsed. The slate roof of the locomotive repair shop (Daikeya) was also severely damaged, and parts of the building tilted. The Machinery Department resumed vehicle repairs the day after the bombing. Given that the railway was tasked with transporting munitions during wartime, the railway was restored surprisingly quickly. *The depot is only open to the public during the annual Freight Festival.
