A monument commemorating the atomic bomb victims of the once prosperous former Tenjin Town Kitagumi

Date of construction: February 1973 Tenjin-cho was a part of the Nakajima district, which flourished as the center of the city's entertainment and entertainment district. It was long and narrow from north to south, and was divided into the Kita-gumi and Minami-gumi. The lively town, where many people lived as a shopping street, is described on an explanatory board next to the monument, "The former site of the Kita-gumi of Tenjin-cho." However, only 500 meters from the hypocenter, the houses were completely destroyed in an instant, and it is said that not only the residents, but also the junior high school students and female students who were mobilized to help with the work, as the area was designated as a building evacuation area along with the neighboring town, were all killed instantly. The fire was so fierce that people who returned in the evening looking for their relatives were unable to enter. After the war, the burnt-out town became Peace Memorial Park, and the town disappeared. (The Minami-gumi monument is located on the banks of the Motoyasu River on the south side of Heiwa Boulevard.)
