A department store that opened as a modern building at the time of the atomic bombing, 710m from the hypocenter.

In 1938 (Showa 13), the new Fukuya Department Store opened with 2 basement floors and 8 floors above ground. It was a modern building with heating and air conditioning, which was still rare at the time, and it was bustling with customers. However, the times were already wartime. In 1945, the store was forced to close as the army and control companies began using it. In the same year, the store was hit by the atomic bomb 710 meters from the hypocenter. After the war, the unused floors were used for rental purposes, but in 1951 (Showa 26), the store finally restored its pre-war sales floor space. It has undergone several expansions and renovations, and in 1972 the exterior walls were completely renovated.
