Hiroshima City Hall Former Government Building Materials Exhibition Room (A-bombed building)

A renovated material exhibition room in a part of the old city hall that preserves memories of the atomic bombing.

Hiroshima City was established in 1889 (Meiji 22) as one of the first cities in Japan under the municipal system. In 1928 (Showa 3), the city moved from Nakajima-Shinmachi to its current location due to the expansion and deterioration of city administration. A new city hall was completed, incorporating modern European architectural style, with one basement floor and four floors above ground. The cream-colored exterior was modestly decorated, and the building was deeply excavated with ten exposed pillars supporting the protruding part of the fourth floor. The building was hit by the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, 1.02 kilometers from the hypocenter. It could not avoid the spread of the fire due to the raging fire in the surrounding area. In constructing the new city hall, the stone steps and paving stones at the front entrance, which still show signs of damage, were used as a memorial space, and the basement, which was used as a distribution department warehouse at the time of the atomic bombing, was renovated and preserved as an exhibition room for materials related to the records of the damage, which will convey the reality of the bombing, mainly of the old city hall, to future generations.
