Hiroshima City Hall Former Government Building Materials Exhibition Room (A-bombed building)

A renovated material exhibition room in a part of the old city hall that preserves memories of the atomic bombing.

Hiroshima City was established in 1889 (Meiji 22) as one of the first cities in Japan under the municipal system. In 1928 (Showa 3), it was moved from Nakajima Shinmachi to its current location due to the expansion of the city administration and aging. A government building with one basement floor and four floors above ground, incorporating modern European architectural style, has been completed. The cream-colored exterior was modestly decorated, and it was a deeply carved building with 10 exposed pillars supporting the protruding fourth floor. On August 6, 1945, the area was 1.02 kilometers from the hypocenter of the bombing. Due to the raging fire in the surrounding area, the fire could not be prevented from spreading. When constructing the new government building, the stone steps and paving stones at the front entrance, which have traces of damage from the disaster, will be used as a memorial space and as a warehouse for the distribution department during the atomic bombing.
