A brick warehouse that was exposed to the atomic bomb but escaped fire and was used as a temporary relief station.
This building was the Hiroshima Army Clothing Depot at the time of the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. The Clothing Depot was a facility that manufactured, repaired, stored, and supplied military uniforms, military caps, and other accessories worn by soldiers. It had a large manufacturing and repair factory and a group of warehouses for storage and supply. What remains today are four warehouses made of reinforced concrete and brick, completed in 1914 (Taisho 3). Located 2.67 kilometers from the hypocenter, the roofs were severely damaged by the blast but escaped fire. Immediately after the bombing, it became a temporary relief center and accepted many victims, but one after another, they lost their lives here. After the war, it was temporarily used by Hiroshima Higher Normal School (now the Faculty of Education of Hiroshima University), as well as a warehouse for a transportation company (Ideshio Warehouse) and a student dormitory. Some of the iron doors of the three western buildings remain deformed by the blast during the bombing. Please note that we are currently unable to accept tours of the site due to safety measures being implemented (scheduled to run until the end of fiscal year 2026).
