An arch-type dam that boasts the second highest bank height in Japan after the Kurobe Dam
The arch dam is 156m high, the second tallest in Japan after Kurobe Dam's 186m. It is the first multipurpose dam in the Ota River basin, with functions such as flood control, water supply, power generation, and ensuring normal river flow. You can view the inside of the dam from the observation tunnel using the elevator. You can also look up at the dam from Omoide Hiroba Nukui 156 (Downstream Hiroba), which can be reached by passing through the observation tunnel. The management office also has a rooftop observation deck and a reference room that displays materials from the time of the dam's construction. The dam lake, Lake Ryuhime, has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Dam Lakes. The area around the dam changes with the seasons, with cherry blossoms, azaleas, and hydrangeas, the sparkling Lake Ryuhime, the rapidly changing autumn leaves, and the snowy winter scenery. In spring, the water level is lowered and released as a flood prevention measure before the rainy season, attracting many visitors. The drop from the mid-altitude discharge facility is about 60 meters, and it's so impressive that you can get soaked by the spray when viewing from the downstream plaza.
