Jizo Bodhisattva carved into a huge rock
Located at the entrance to Mukouda Port, at high tide the water comes up to the Jizo's shoulders. The huge granite rock in the sea is about 4.7m wide, 2.7m high and 4m thick, with Jizo Bodhisattva carved into its western face. The statue bears an inscription by the Buddhist sculptor Nenshin from 1300, and although some parts are worn away by waves, the precise carvings remain. The statue is 95cm tall. It is a prefectural important cultural property.
