The former outpatient building that was exposed to the atomic bombing but did not collapse and was used to treat many atomic bomb survivors.
This building, made of reinforced concrete and designed by architect Mamoru Yamada in 1935 (Showa 10), was formerly an affiliated hospital of the Hiroshima Post and Telecommunications Bureau, and its distinctive design features wide open windows that create a sense of openness. At the time of the bombing, the windows were blown away by the blast, but the building escaped collapse, and many victims received treatment there. After undergoing renovations, it has been preserved as a building that conveys the reality of the bombing, and is open to the public free of charge. In the Atomic Bombing Archives, the old operating room and sterilization room, which still have tiles from the time of the bombing, as well as materials related to the bombing are on display.
