Important traditional buildings preservation district of the country with a calm atmosphere
Takehara is known as Aki's Little Kyoto due to its history as a manor of Kyoto's Shimogamo Shrine during the Heian period. Its symbol is the townscape preservation district, which has been designated as one of the country's Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings and exudes a tranquil atmosphere. During the Edo period, when the area rapidly developed as a salt production area, the area's wealthy economy produced many talented scholars, including brothers Yori Shunsui, Shunpu, and Kyohei, as well as Rai Sanyo. The stately homes that were born out of the prosperity of the salt fields and townspeople's culture continue to convey the appearance of those days to this day.
