Located at the foot of Mt. Misen, directly behind Itsukushima Shrine, it is the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism. As the head priest of Itsukushima Shrine, it was in charge of the shrine's festivals. It is the center of Buddhist faith on the island, and is in charge of the ruins where Kobo Daishi of Mt. Misen practiced the secret teachings of Gumonji.
